What is a steel rail?
A steel rail is a specially shaped, high-strength steel bar forming the guiding and load-bearing surface of railway tracks, providing a smooth path for train wheels while withstanding immense weight, impact, and wear, essentially guiding vehicles and transferring forces to the sleepers (ties) beneath. These inverted T-shaped profiles, made from durable, wear-resistant steel alloys, are joined end-to-end (often welded into Continuous Welded Rail or CWR) to create continuous tracks for trains, trams, and cranes.
Key Functions
- Guidance: Guides the locomotive and vehicles forward.
- Support: Bears the enormous pressure and dynamic loads from passing trains.
- Smooth Surface: Offers a low-resistance, continuous rolling surface for wheels.
- Circuitry: Can act as a track circuit in electrified railways.

- Composition: High-carbon steel with elements like manganese, silicon, chromium, niobium, or vanadium for strength and hardness.
