Rail fasteners can be categorized by type, including spikes, bolts, clips, and plates. Common examples are rail spikes and screw spikes, fish bolts and hook bolts, and various types of rail clips like E-clips and SKL clips. Other important components include rail pads, tie plates, and rail anchors, which work together to secure the rail to the sleeper.

Railway Spikes

Rail spike (or dog spike): A large nail with an offset head used to fasten rails and tie plates to wooden sleepers.
Screw spike: A screw-type fastener, often used to attach baseplates to wooden or concrete sleepers.
Bolts

Fish bolt: Connects fish plates to rails at a joint.
Hook bolt (or dog bolt): Used to secure wooden sleepers to bridge girders.
Fang bolt: Secures chairs to sleepers.
Rag bolt: Connects longitudinal sleepers to concrete walls.
Track bolt: A general term for various bolts used to fasten components together.
Clips

E-clip: A very common type of elastic rail clip.
SKL clip: Another popular type of elastic clip fastener.
KPO clamp: A type of clamp used in various fastening systems.
Nabla clip: An elastic clip often used in rail fastening systems.
Spring blade clip: Fasteners that use a spring blade to provide clamping force.
