The safe and stable operation of railways relies on reliable fastening systems. Type I, II, and III railway fastening systems play critical roles in different scenarios, each with unique features and application scopes.
A bolted, shouldered fastener, Type I suits ballasted tracks with concrete sleepers on passenger-freight joint railways-both straight lines and curves with radii ≥295m. It works for 50 kg/m rails and 60 kg/m rail seamless lines. Composed of ω-shaped elastic clips (Types A and B), spiral spikes, gauge retainers, retainer seats, and rubber padding plates, it adjusts gauge via retainer-seat coordination. While providing stable rail-sleeper clamping, its clamping force durability and fatigue resistance have limitations for high-speed or heavy-haul railways.

Also a bolted, shouldered design, Type II primarily applies to 60 kg/m rail seamless lines. With upgraded performance, each elastic clip offers 10 kN clamping force and 10 mm stroke. Under-rail pad static stiffness ranges from 55–80 kN/mm (standard sections) to 40–60 kN/mm (rail joints), optimizing track elasticity to better withstand train forces. It is used in speed-up upgraded conventional railways and some high-speed lines.

A shoulderless, boltless fastener, Type III fits 60 kg/m rails on standard-gauge lines-mainly straight tracks or curves (radius ≥350m) with shoulderless concrete sleepers for seamless lines. Gauge adjustment (-8 to +4 mm) is done by changing insulated gauge blocks. Featuring high clamping force and elasticity, its shoulderless design reduces gauge expansion and maintenance needs, making it ideal for high-speed railways and lines requiring strict track stability.

Conclusion
Designed for varying railway conditions, rail types, speeds, and traffic volumes, Type I, II, and III systems each serve specific roles. Together, they ensure track safety and drive railway transportation development.
