Track pads, also called track rubber sheets, are designed between the track sleeper plate and the foot of the rail, made of elastic polyurethane pads, placed between the rail and the sleeper to protect the top of the sleeper from wear and impact. Its specified stiffness is used to increase the elasticity of the ballast superstructure and reduce shock and vibration in the track system. This improved load distribution increases passenger comfort and reduces wear on the superstructure. The increased elasticity has a positive effect on wear on the superstructure components and on the vehicles. They are always fastened to the sleepers using screw spikes or track bolts in the fastening system. The reason that track pads are made of rubber or plastic is to cushion the shocks and vibrations when trains pass by. Usually, the starting stiffness is designed slightly lower to allow for a larger relative deformation under the toe load of the spring clip, which allows the track pad to remain tightly attached to the track despite the vertical movement of the track.
