Product Introduction

The rail pad (also termed tie pad or rail seating pad) serves as a critical interface between the steel rail and sleeper (or track slab). This essential component performs multiple core functions within the fastening system. The pad cushions train-induced impacts and vibrations, reducing fatigue damage to both rails and sleepers. By distributing wheel-rail loads, this engineered layer prevents localized stress concentration that could cause sleeper cracking. Rail pads enable precise rail surface elevation adjustment, ensuring optimal track geometry. Certain pads incorporate insulating properties to prevent track circuit interference. Furthermore, the pad protects the sleeper's top surface from direct abrasion by the rail. Ultimately, this component enhances overall fastening system stability, ensuring operational safety and extending track service life.

A ballast mat is an elastic layer structure. It is installed between the ballast (crushed stone) layer of a railway track and the top of the subgrade (soil base).

It mainly consists of two parts:

  • The upper layer is a perforated concrete slab. It provides support and distributes pressure.
  • The lower layer is a highly elastic rubber pad. It provides cushioning and vibration damping.

Its core functions are:

  • Reducing ballast particle wear, breakage, and embedment into the subgrade.
  • Effectively preventing ballast fouling.
  • Maintaining track bed drainage performance.
  • Reducing track settlement and irregularities.
  • It absorbs impact and vibration from train loads. This significantly lowers track bed maintenance requirements. It extends the service life of the track structure.

Ballast mat

Sub Ballast protection mat is especially suitable for areas with poor subgrade conditions, heavy haul transport, or high-speed rail sections. It is a key engineering measure to enhance track stability and durability.

Rail Component Coordination with Ballast Mat

Rail Pad Coordinates vibration damping to create a stiffness transition interface
Elastic Rail Clip Maintains gauge stability and reduces transverse loads on the ballast mat
Rail Guide Plate Constrains rail displacement to minimize ballast bed disturbance
Sleeper Acts as force transfer medium requiring full contact with ballast mat

Ballast pad material--Polyurethane

The polyurethane ballast mat is applied between the ballast and subgrade in ballasted tracks. This engineered component consists of a cellular elastic polyurethane sheet bonded with nonwoven fabric on one surface. During installation, the nonwoven fabric layer must face upward toward the ballast layer. This orientation prevents sharp ballast particles from puncturing the polyurethane elastomer. When operational, portions of the ballast embed into the mat's surface. This embedding effect significantly increases the contact area between the ballast bed and subgrade. Simultaneously, train loads distribute more uniformly across the track structure.
