Is surface treatment for rail screw spikes necessary?

The screw spike is also known as rail screw. As one kind of Rail spike, it is a metal screw for fixing rail fasteners. Screw spike is usually made of NO.3 steel. Because its nail rod surface has thread, so it is called screw spike. The pull-out resistance is 0.5 ~ 1.0 times larger than that of common rail spike, but the thrust resistance is 50% less. Due to disassembly and assembly inconvenience, it is difficult to adjust the rail gauge, which is generally used on the railway turnout.

For meeting various needs of clients, we can offer coach screws, stud screw, railway sleeper screws and other coustom screw spike in railway.

Is surface treatment for rail screw spikes necessary?

Yes, surface treatment for rail screw spikes is necessary to prevent corrosion, improve durability, and maintain the strength of the track system. Without treatment, spikes are vulnerable to rust and degradation from harsh environmental conditions, which can lead to premature failure and compromise rail safety. Common treatments include hot-dip galvanizing, electro-galvanizing, and specialized coatings.

Reasons for surface treatment

  • Corrosion prevention: Spikes are exposed to moisture, salt, and other corrosive elements that cause rust, which weakens the metal. Surface treatments create a protective barrier against these factors, extending the life of the spike.

  • Improved friction: Coatings, especially zinc, can fill thread gaps, which increases friction and makes the spike more resistant to pulling out.

Increased wear resistance: Some treatments are formulated to withstand the constant stress and friction from passing trains.

  • Maintained performance: A rusted or degraded spike cannot hold the rail securely, compromising the integrity of the entire track and threatening safety.

Common surface treatments

  • Hot-dip galvanizing (HDG): A process where spikes are coated in a protective layer of zinc.

  • Electro-galvanizing: An electrochemical process that applies a thin, uniform coating of zinc.

  • Dacromet coating: A specialized chemical treatment for improved corrosion resistance.

  • Plain (oiled): A basic, less protective option.

  • Bluing: A chemical process that creates a black oxide layer for some corrosion protection.

Painting: A protective or aesthetic layer that can provide corrosion resistance.
