Steel rail, also called rail track, steel track, is the main component of railway track. Its function is to guide the wheels of the locomotive, bear the great pressure of the wheel, and keep the stability of railway transportation. The rail must provide continuous, smooth and minimum rolling surfaces for the wheels. In electrified railway or automatic block section, rail can also be used as an orbital circuit.

Heavy rails refer to track systems designed for high-capacity vehicle operations, classified by rail weight per meter into heavy rails and light rails, while track gauges are categorized into broad gauge, standard gauge, and narrow gauge (including meter gauge and inch gauge). Rails weighing 30kg/m and above are termed heavy rails, deployed in high-speed railways, heavy-haul railways, intercity railways, and urban rail transit. Rail specifications are defined by nominal weight per meter, with common models being 50kg/m, 60kg/m, and 75kg/m.
