What is the standard for the elastic recovery rate of railway pads?

Rail pads play a critical role in the stability and maintenance of railway systems. As an essential component in solidifying the relationship between the rail and the railway sleeper, they provide not only structural support but also enhance the overall performance of railway infrastructure.

What is the standard for the elastic recovery rate of railway pads?

There's no single universal number for rail pad elastic recovery; standards vary by application (freight vs. high-speed) and climate, but generally, high-performance pads aim for ≥90% elastic recovery at low temperatures (e.g., -40°C), while standard rubber pads might be around ≥75% at -30°C, balancing load-bearing, vibration damping, and durability across temperature extremes. Key performance indicators also include low compression set (e.g., ≤15%), minimal elastic attenuation (≤3% after millions of cycles), and stable elastic modulus (e.g., ±5%) to ensure consistent performance and longevity.

Key Standards & Targets:

  • High-Performance/Alpine Regions: ≥90% elastic recovery at -40°C, crucial for preventing hardening and breakage in cold weather.

  • Standard Rubber Pads (Temperate Zones): ≥75% elastic recovery at -30°C, with a typical service life of 5-8 years.

  • Compression Set: Lower is better; ≤15% indicates longer life (≥7 years), while >20% suggests <3 years service.

  • Elastic Modulus Stability: For high-speed lines, ±5% fluctuation ensures geometric stability.

What is the maximum load-bearing capacity of a railway pad?

Railway pad load capacity varies greatly by type (elastomeric, fibre-reinforced) and application (metro, freight, high-speed), but they are designed to handle significant loads, from axle loads up to 25-40 tonnes (250-400 kN) for heavy freight/conventional lines and much more for specific high-capacity systems, balancing high mechanical strength with required elasticity to manage dynamic train forces and protect track components.

  • Axle Load Focus: Pads handle static loads (half the axle load) and dynamic increases from moving trains.

  • Heavy Haul/Freight: Pads support axle loads up to 25 tonnes (250 kN) or more, preventing track bending and reducing maintenance.

  • High-Speed/Metro: Specialized pads handle higher speeds and dynamic forces, with some systems designed for extreme loads (e.g., 26 tonnes axle load in metro).

  • Stiffness: Measured in kN/mm, pads range from soft (<< 80 kN/mm) to hard (>= 150 kN/mm), with specific stiffness required for different train types (e.g., high-speed needs specific hardness like 60±5 Shore A).

GNEE RAIL provides exceptional elastic rail pads of various types for high-speed railways, normal-speed railways, and cranes. Especially the rail pads made of rubber, EVA, TPEE, and HDPE are very popular with customers. Our railway rubber pads fit the rails such as UIC54, UIC60, BS80lbs, BS100lbs, etc. We have more than 130set of machines in our production lines which can reach an annual production capacity of up to 2000, 000 pieces of rail pads. We offer a wide range of rail pads and other track materials at competitive prices.
