What is a steel rail?

A steel rail is a rolled steel profile installed as the primary load-bearing and guiding surface for railway vehicles and industrial equipment, designed to support wheels, maintain gauge, and transmit vertical and lateral forces safely into the track structure and foundation. In engineering terms, it is not merely a metal bar, but a precision-manufactured component of a complete rail system with strictly controlled geometry, metallurgy, and mechanical performance.

  • Structurally, a steel rail has three functional parts: the rail head, which contacts the wheel and resists wear and rolling contact fatigue; the web, which transfers loads and resists bending; and the foot (base), which distributes forces to sleepers, baseplates, or concrete beams through the fastening system. This cross-section is optimized to handle very high contact stresses while maintaining overall track stability under dynamic loading, braking forces, and thermal expansion.

  • From a material standpoint, steel rails are made from high-carbon pearlitic rail steel such as U71Mn, U75V, R260, R350HT, and 900A, which combine high hardness at the running surface with sufficient toughness in the body of the rail. These steels are selected to resist wear, plastic flow, head checking, and fatigue cracking under millions of load cycles. For heavy-duty service, rails may be head-hardened to further increase surface hardness and extend service life, especially on sharp curves, heavy-haul lines, and crane runways.

  • In application, steel rails are used not only on public railways but also in mining railways, port terminals, steel plants, warehouses, and crane runway systems. In conventional rail transport, rails are paired with sleepers (ties), ballast or slab track, and elastic fastening systems to form the permanent way. In industrial environments, rails are often mounted on concrete beams with high-strength baseplates and clips, forming a crane rail track capable of carrying extremely high wheel loads and strong lateral forces generated by trolley travel and skewing.

  • In international standards, steel rails are classified by profile and performance under systems such as GB, EN, UIC, AREMA/ASCE, DIN 536, BS, JIS, and AS, with typical products including light rails (8–30 kg/m), heavy rails (38–60 kg/m), UIC50/54/60 railway rails, DIN 536 A55–A120 crane rails, and QU70/80/100/120 crane rails. Each profile and steel grade combination is selected based on axle load, wheel material, operating speed, curvature, and environmental conditions.
