What is a steel rail?

A steel rail is a hot-rolled, high-strength steel section installed as the primary load-bearing and guiding component of a track system, forming the running surface for wheels and transmitting vertical, lateral, and longitudinal forces to sleepers and the underlying track structure. Unlike ordinary structural steel profiles, a steel rail is metallurgically designed to withstand high contact stress, cyclic fatigue, impact loading, and long-term abrasive wear.

Structural Function of a Steel Rail in the Track System

From an engineering perspective, the steel rail performs three core mechanical functions simultaneously. First, it guides wheelsets by providing precise geometry that maintains gauge and directional stability. Second, it distributes wheel loads over multiple sleepers, reducing stress concentration on ballast or concrete track beds. Third, it resists longitudinal forces generated by traction, braking, and thermal expansion, working together with fasteners and anchors to control rail movement.

Because of these combined roles, rail sections are designed with a head–web–foot profile. The head resists wear and rolling contact fatigue, the web carries shear forces and bending stresses, and the foot provides stable seating on base plates or sleepers for secure fastening. The profile geometry varies by standard and application, which is why international systems such as UIC60 (EN 13674), AREMA 115RE, JIS 60kg, DIN A-series crane rails, and GB light and heavy rails are not directly interchangeable without engineering verification.

Types of Steel Track Rail

Steel track rails are categorized by usage (light, heavy, crane), material composition (carbon, alloy, head-hardened), and profile (flat-bottom, grooved), with modern rails using heat treatment and specialized alloys like manganese-vanadium for enhanced wear resistance, durability, and fatigue life, meeting standards like UIC, AREMA, or BS.
