Matching Fishplate Material Selection with Track Axle Load and Speed Rating

What are the core differences in material selection for fish plates between ordinary-speed light axle load lines and heavy-haul lines?

Ordinary-speed light axle load lines (axle load ≤21t) mostly use Q235B or 45# steel fish plates. These materials have good plasticity and weldability, meeting the joint force transmission requirements under normal loads with low cost. Heavy-haul lines (axle load ≥25t) must use U71Mn or alloy steel fish plates, whose tensile strength (≥880MPa) is much higher than that of 45# steel (600MPa), enabling them to withstand the huge tensile and shear loads generated by heavy-haul trains. Heavy-haul fish plates also undergo quenching and tempering to combine high strength and toughness, preventing brittle fracture under impact loads. The two types of materials cannot be mixed, as this would lead to insufficient joint strength.

Why do seamless track joints on high-speed lines still require special fish plates as emergency backups?

Although high-speed seamless lines primarily use welded joints, special fish plates are needed for temporary joint connections during construction rush repairs, rail replacement, or when welding quality is unqualified. Emergency fish plates for high-speed lines are made of high-strength alloy steel and precision-machined, with joint stiffness close to that of welded joints, reducing wheel-rail impact. These fish plates have higher bolt hole position accuracy and stronger clamping force, allowing trains to pass temporary joints at more than 80% of the design speed, avoiding excessive speed restrictions caused by temporary joints and ensuring transportation efficiency.

What key impact does the impact toughness of fish plate materials have on their fatigue resistance?

Impact toughness is a core indicator measuring the fish plate's ability to resist impact loads; heavy-haul and high-speed lines require fish plates to have an impact toughness ≥40J/cm² (-20℃). Insufficient impact toughness makes fish plates prone to micro-crack initiation at stress concentration points such as bolt holes under high-frequency train impacts. These micro-cracks propagate rapidly, leading to early fatigue fracture of the fish plate. In contrast, materials with high impact toughness can absorb impact energy through plastic deformation, inhibiting micro-crack initiation and propagation, and extending fatigue life by more than 50%. Therefore, lines in low-temperature environments have more stringent requirements for fish plate impact toughness.

What precautions should be taken in material selection for fish plates matching imported international standard rails (e.g., ASTM rails)?

Imported ASTM rails have significantly different materials from Chinese standard rails, and their matching fish plates must use imported materials or equivalent domestic materials with mechanical properties matching the rail material. For example, ASTM A1 Grade 2 rails require matching ASTM A36 or A572 Grade 50 fish plates to ensure the joint's strength and toughness are consistent with the rail. It is prohibited to use Chinese standard Q235B fish plates for imported rails, as this would cause "strength mismatch" and lead to fish plate failure before the rail. In addition, the chemical composition and heat treatment process of the fish plate must be verified to ensure they meet the corrosion, temperature, and other service environment requirements of the international standard line.

How to preliminarily judge whether the fish plate material meets service requirements through simple methods on site?

A portable Leeb hardness tester can be used to detect the surface hardness of the fish plate: Q235B fish plates have a hardness of approximately HB120-160, 45# steel about HB160-200, and U71Mn alloy steel about HB220-280. A deviation from the corresponding range indicates possible material unqualification. At the same time, observe the surface quality of the fish plate: high-strength alloy steel fish plates have a smoother surface without obvious casting defects, while low-strength material fish plates may have surface roughness, slag inclusions, and other issues. In addition, checking the product certificate and material test report to verify the material grade and mechanical property indicators is the most basic and critical judgment method.
