A rail fish plate is a mechanical connector that clamps adjacent rail webs together, ensuring accurate alignment and effective stress transfer across joints in track systems where welding is not applied. Its geometry must correspond exactly to the rail profile. GNEE RAILWAY RAILWAY supplies fish plates for GB 8–60 kg/m, UIC50–UIC60, DIN536 A-series, QU crane rails, JIS standards, AS1085 rails, BS11 sections, and AREMA/ASCE rails, and supports customers with profile confirmation and dimensional inspection services.

| Joint Type | Key Specification / Description |
|---|---|
| Standard Rail Joint (Fish Plate) | - Profile: Matches the rail section (e.g., UIC 60, 136RE). - Length: Typically 600mm or 800mm per side. - Holes: 4 or 6 bolt holes per bar. |
| Insulated Rail Joint (IRJ) | - Material: Steel core with composite insulating end-posts/plates, or full epoxy composite. - Electrical Resistance: >10⁸ Ω. |
| Compromise Rail Joint | - Design: Connects two different rail profiles (e.g., UIC 54 to UIC 60). - Profile: Each side is machined to match its respective rail section. |
| Joggled Rail Joint | - Feature: Has a depressed (joggled) section to allow continuous rail head surface for smoother wheel passage. |
| Bridge Rail Joint | - Design: Often reinforced (thicker web/longer length) for high-stress locations like bridge approaches. |
| Glued Insulated Joint | - Construction: Steel bars bonded to composite insulation using high-strength adhesive for improved durability. |
| Welded Rail Joint (for CWR) | - Type: Flash-butt or thermite weld. - Specification: Weld must meet mechanical properties equal to or greater than the parent rail. |
| Expansion Joint (for BRE) | - Feature: Allows controlled thermal expansion in long rails on bridges or in extreme temperature zones. |
How To Install Glued Insulated Rail Joint?
Installing a glued insulated rail joint (GIJ) involves precisely cutting, cleaning, and bonding the rail ends with adhesive, insulated fishplates, and bolts to ensure electrical isolation for track circuits. Key steps include preparing the rail ends, applying adhesive to all contact surfaces, inserting insulating components, tightening high-tensile bolts to specific torques, and testing insulation resistance, which should exceed 10-25 mega-ohms.

Preparation and Cutting:
- Cut and remove the required length of rail, ensuring the ends are cut vertically and horizontally with a deviation not exceeding 0.15 mm.
- Clean the rail web, fishing surfaces, and ends thoroughly, removing rust, grease, and burrs using a wire brush or angle grinder.
- Chamfer the rail ends and bolt holes by 1-2 mm at a 45° angle to prevent insulation damage.
Applying Glue and Components:
- Apply a specially formulated, approved epoxy glue to the fishing surfaces of the rails, the fishplates, and the end post.
- Insert the insulating end post (6 mm or 10 mm) between the rail ends.
- Position the insulated fishplates against the rail web, ensuring all surfaces are fully coated with adhesive.
Bolt Insertion and Tightening:

- Insert the insulating bushes/sleeves, which should also be coated with glue or pre-dipped.
- Insert and tighten the bolts in the correct sequence (usually inner to outer) to the specified torque.
Finishing and Testing:
- Wipe off excess glue.
- Allow the joint to cure properly based on ambient temperatures.
- Perform an insulation resistance test using a 100 V DC megger, ensuring resistance is at least 10–25 MΩ.
