How thick are rail pads?

When specifying components for a railway fastening system, one of the most critical dimensions to consider is the thickness of the Rail Pad. While it acts as a simple interface between the rail and the sleeper, the thickness of this Rail Rubber Pad is mathematically calculated to ensure the safety and longevity of the track infrastructure.

What is the Standard Thickness?

There is no "one-size-fits-all" answer, as the thickness of a Railway Pad is dictated by the type of fastening system (e.g., E-clip, SKL, Nabla) and the operational requirements of the line.

Generally, standard thicknesses in the industry range from 5mm to 12mm:

  • Standard Freight & Passenger Lines: The most frequently used thickness falls between 6mm and 7mm. This provides a balanced interface that protects the sleeper while maintaining track gauge.

  • High-Speed Rail: To achieve superior vibration attenuation, these lines often utilize a thicker Rail Elastic Pad, typically 9mm to 12mm. These are often made from natural rubber with studded or grooved surfaces to lower the stiffness.

  • Heavy Haul Lines: For tracks carrying immense axle loads, a thinner, stiffer material like an HDPE Pad or EVA Pad (around 5mm-6mm) is often preferred to prevent excessive compression and rail rollover.

We have developed a range of high-performance elastic rail pads for stiffness requirements and various application areas-from trams through standard gauge railways to heavy haul lines, especially those for E-type rail fastening systems and SKL type rail fastening systems with material of HDPE/EVA/Rubber, with following properties respectively.

Why Does Thickness Matter?

The thickness of the Railroad Pad is integral to the "System Stiffness."

  • Toe Load Compatibility: The fastening system is designed for a specific assembly height. A Track Pad that is too thick will overstress the clip, potentially causing fatigue failure. Conversely, a pad that is too thin will result in insufficient clamping force, leading to rail creep.

  • Vibration Damping: A thicker Resilient Rail Pad allows for greater vertical deflection, which acts as a better shock absorber. This is why urban transit systems near residential areas often opt for specialized, thicker pads.
