Do you know the history of fishplates?

The history of fishplates (or fish joints) can be traced back to the 1830s, and was first invented by British engineer Henry Gregg. The original intention was to improve the connection method of railway tracks.

The basic design of this device is a V-shaped rail clamp that butts two pieces of rail together. This design reduces the gaps between the rails, thereby reducing noise and vibration from the wheels as they pass by. In addition, the design of the fishplate also makes the rails easier to replace or move.

In May 1842, William Bridges Adams was dissatisfied with the miter joints and other systems for joining rails in use at the time. He pointed out that in order to form the miter joint, the thickness of the rails was halved at each end, where the stresses were greatest, and this was improved. This device was first deployed on the Eastern County Railway in 1844, but only as a wedge between adjacent railroads. Adams and Robert Richardson patented the invention in 1847, but in 1849, ECR engineer James Samuel developed a fishplate that could be bolted to the rails.
