The technical parameter design of rail pads directly determines their adaptability. The core indicators include stiffness, compression and fatigue resistance. The stiffness needs to match the track design. The stiffness of ordinary railway pads is usually 50-150kN/mm, while that of high-speed railways needs to be precisely controlled at 80-120kN/mm to balance buffering and stability; the compression amount needs to be kept within a reasonable range of 2-5mm under load. Excessive compression will lead to elastic failure, and insufficient compression will make it difficult to play a buffering role. Fatigue resistance is verified by a million-cycle load test, and qualified products should have an elastic retention rate of not less than 80% after the cycle.

The installation process is crucial to the performance of the pad. When laying, it is necessary to ensure that the contact surface between the pad and the rail, sleeper (or track plate) is clean and free of impurities, the edge alignment error is controlled within 1mm, and the initial deformation is eliminated by preloading. On curved tracks, the pad must also cooperate with the gauge baffle to compensate for the force deviation caused by the inclination of the rail and avoid aggravation of local wear.

In terms of maintenance, the rail pads need to be regularly inspected for aging phenomena such as cracking, hardening, and thinning. It is recommended that ordinary lines be inspected once every 3 years, and heavy-load railways are shortened to 1-2 years. If the pad is found to be invalid, it needs to be replaced in time. When replacing, the contact surface status needs to be checked simultaneously to avoid uneven force on the new pad due to uneven foundation.

With the development of rail technology, new rail pads are evolving towards functional integration. For example, smart pads with built-in sensors can monitor load and deformation data in real time, providing accurate basis for track maintenance; environmentally friendly bio-based rubber pads replace traditional rubber with renewable raw materials, while maintaining performance and reducing environmental impact, becoming a new choice for green rail construction.
