Rail Pads: Selection, Coordination And Failure Response

Jul 16, 2025 Leave a message

The selection of rail pads requires comprehensive consideration of multiple factors, not a simple parameter matching. The line axle weight is the key basis. For ordinary lines with an axle weight of less than 15 tons, conventional rubber pads can be selected; for heavy-load lines with an axle weight of more than 25 tons, high-strength polyurethane pads must be selected, and their tear strength must reach more than 15MPa. At the same time, climatic conditions must also be taken into consideration. In areas with an annual temperature difference of more than 60℃, materials with good weather resistance should be preferred to ensure that the pads are not prone to brittleness or softening in alternating hot and cold.

In the track system, rail pads do not exist in isolation, but form a precise coordination mechanism with the fastener system. When the train passes, the clamping force of the spring clip fasteners tightly fixes the rails and pads, and the pads offset part of the lateral force through elastic deformation. The combination of the two can reduce the longitudinal displacement of the rails. In the seamless line section, the friction between the pad and the sleeper must also be balanced with the temperature stress of the rail to prevent the rail from over-expanding due to thermal expansion and contraction.

The failure of the rail pad is often caused by multiple factors. In addition to material aging, slight deviations during installation may also pose hidden dangers. For example, if the edge alignment error exceeds 1mm, the local force will increase by more than 30%, accelerating the wear of the pad. In addition, the long-term humid environment caused by poor drainage of the ballast bed will damage the cross-linked structure of the rubber pad, and the elastic retention rate will decrease year by year. In response to these problems, in addition to regular replacement, the surface can be coated with an anti-aging coating to extend the service life, while optimizing the ballast bed drainage system to reduce environmental erosion of the pad.

Different track structures also have different requirements for pads. The concrete base of the ballastless track has a large rigidity, and the pad needs to have a more precise rigidity adjustment capability. Usually, a composite pad with a layered design is used; for ballasted tracks, the ballast bed itself has a certain elasticity, so the pad can focus on improving wear resistance to cope with the friction of the ballast. This targeted adaptation is an important guarantee for the long-term and stable operation of the rail system.
