With a thickness usually between 3 and 15 mm, the pad's size matches the rail base width, generally covering the rail bottom and 5-10 mm of its side edges. This design enables it to form a force-transmission buffer layer in the "rail-pad-sleeper" structure. Its core functions are threefold: firstly, to cushion the impact between the train wheels and rails, converting instantaneous impact force into elastic potential energy and reducing vibration responses of rails and sleepers; secondly, to evenly distribute loads, transforming the linear load from the rail into a surface load and minimizing local stress on sleepers; thirdly, to provide insulation, preventing current leakage in the track circuit and ensuring the proper operation of signaling systems.

Adhering to industry standards like TB/T 2626, qualified train pads must meet criteria such as a compression set of ≤25% and a temperature resistance range from -40℃ to 70℃. Though not directly involved in structural connections, these pads significantly influence ride comfort and the service life of track components by regulating rail surface elasticity and maintaining uniform track stiffness.
