What are rail fasteners?
Rail fasteners are crucial components that secure steel rails to railway sleepers (ties), maintaining correct track gauge, preventing rail movement (longitudinal, lateral, vertical), and transferring train loads to the track bed while also absorbing shock, dampening noise, and providing elasticity for safe, stable operation. They are complex systems, often comprising clips, spikes, bolts, tie plates, and pads, designed to withstand immense forces and vibrations from passing trains.
Main Types of Rail Fastening
Fish plates: Splice bars or joint bars are metal bars that are bolted to the ends of two rails to join them together in a track.

Screw spikes: A screw spike, rail screw or lag bolt is a large (roughly 6in or 152mm in length, slightly under 1in or 25mm in diameter) metal screw used to fix a tie plate or to directly fasten a rail.
