Spring Clip Failure Modes and Preventative Measures
- What are the common failure modes of elastic clips?
Common failure modes of elastic clips include: fatigue fracture, mostly occurring at bends due to long-term alternating stress; plastic deformation, manifested as a decrease in clamping force of elastic clips, unable to effectively fix the rail; severe corrosion, with large-area rust pits on the surface, weakening structural strength; end wear, size reduction at the contact part with the rail or 扣板 due to friction, affecting clamping force. These failure modes will reduce the fastening effect of elastic clips and need to be handled in time.

- How to judge whether elastic clips are at risk of fatigue fracture?
It can be judged by appearance inspection. If there are fine cracks at the bends of elastic clips (visible with a 10x magnifying glass), there is a risk of fracture; measure the residual deformation of elastic clips. In the unloaded state, if the free length is 2mm longer than the initial value, it indicates that internal fatigue damage has occurred; for elastic clips used for more than 5 years, sample fatigue tests are conducted. If the number of cycles is less than 80% of the standard value, batch inspection is required. Elastic clips with fracture risk should be replaced in advance.

- What are the main causes of plastic deformation of elastic clips?
The yield strength of the elastic clip material is insufficient, unable to withstand long-term clamping force loads, and prone to plastic deformation; excessive preload during installation, exceeding the yield limit of the elastic clip, leading to early plastic deformation; high-temperature environment (such as rail temperature exceeding 60℃ in summer) will reduce the strength of the elastic clip material, gradually deforming under continuous load; improper heat treatment during the manufacturing process of elastic clips, such as excessive tempering temperature, making the hardness lower than the standard value (HB380-420), will also increase the risk of plastic deformation.

- What are the effective measures to prevent corrosion of elastic clips?
Galvanizing treatment (zinc layer thickness ≥8μm) is used to form a protective film to isolate air and moisture; apply wear-resistant and anti-rust coating (such as polyamide coating) on the surface of elastic clips to improve corrosion resistance; regularly clean the dirt and accumulated water on the surface of elastic clips to keep them dry; in coastal or humid areas, select stainless steel elastic clips (such as 304 stainless steel), whose corrosion resistance is 3-5 times that of ordinary elastic clips; strengthen track drainage to avoid elastic clips being soaked in water for a long time.
- What protective measures can be taken for the end wear of elastic clips?
Install wear-resistant gaskets (made of high manganese steel) at the contact part between the end of the elastic clip and the rail to reduce direct friction; quench the end of the elastic clip to increase surface hardness (≥HRC40) and enhance wear resistance; optimize the fitting gap between the elastic clip and the 扣板,control it at 0.3-0.5mm to reduce relative sliding friction; regularly check the wear situation, and replace the elastic clip in time when the end thickness is reduced by more than 1mm.
