Interaction between rail pads and other railway fasteners

The rail pad does not exist independently, but is a system that works together with fasteners such as spring clips, bolts, and gauge blocks. Its performance needs to form a dynamic match with other components to jointly maintain the stability of the track structure.

The interaction with the spring clip is reflected in the transmission and feedback of force. The spring clip presses the rail against the pad through the preload force. The elastic deformation of the pad will affect the working state of the spring clip: when the static stiffness of the pad is 80-100kN/mm, the buckling pressure of the spring clip can be stabilized at 8-13kN (in line with TB/T 3396 standard). If the stiffness of the pad is low (<60kN/mm), the deformation of the spring clip will be too large, and the buckling pressure will decay faster. On the contrary, a high-stiffness pad (>120kN/mm) will cause the spring clip to bear additional stress and shorten its fatigue life.

The tightening torque of the rail bolt directly regulates the stress state of the pad. During installation, the torque should be set according to the material of the pad: 300-350N・m is required for rubber pads, and elasticity is exerted through moderate compression (compression amount 15%-20%); polyurethane pads have stronger resilience, and the torque needs to be increased to 350-400N・m to prevent instantaneous loosening when the train passes. The cooperation between the two must ensure that the contact stress between the pad and the rail and sleeper is evenly distributed, and the local stress peak does not exceed 20MPa.

The edge of the gauge block and the pad cooperates to control the lateral stability of the track. The gap between the inner side of the gauge block and the edge of the pad must be controlled at 0.5-1mm, which not only reserves lateral deformation space for the pad (about 0.3mm), but also limits excessive displacement of the rail. In the curved section, the gauge block with an inclined surface must be precisely fitted with the chamfer of the pad (deviation <0.3mm) to avoid local force concentration on the pad due to excessive gap, causing edge tearing.

The combination with the height-adjusting pad must follow the principle of progressive stiffness. When stacking height adjustment pads, the stiffness of the top rail pad should be lower than that of the lower rail pad (usually 20%-30% difference), forming a "soft-hard" combination, which not only ensures elastic buffering, but also avoids sudden changes in overall stiffness. At the same time, the total thickness must be controlled within 25mm to prevent insufficient tightening force caused by excessive bolt length and ensure the overall stability of the fastener system.

This interaction requires that the parameter design of the rail pad must be included in the overall consideration of the fastener system, and through stiffness matching, size coordination and force value balance, the dynamic stability of "pad-fastener-rail" can be achieved to provide reliable support for the track structure.
