How do gauge rods function in railway fastening systems

Aug 05, 2025 Leave a message

Gauge tie rods are key fastening components in railway track systems. Like other important railway fasteners such as elastic clips, track bolts, and anti-loosening nuts, they are core components for maintaining track integrity. The absence of gauge tie rods can lead to dangerous gauge deviations, increasing the risk of train derailment and causing catastrophic consequences. To ensure precise track gauge and operational safety, gauge tie rods are crucial for keeping rails in the correct positional relationship, and their functions complement those of fish plates, sleeper bolts, and base plates in the overall track structure.

In addition to gauge tie rods, GNEE RAIL can provide various railway fasteners, including fish plates, fish bolts, flat washers, railway clips, turnout components, rubber pads, and under-rail pads. Furthermore, we offer customization services; if you have special requirements for product performance such as anti-corrosion, please contact us.

Functionally, gauge tie rods exert a pair of equal and opposite axial forces along their shaft, resulting in axial elongation or shortening (known as axial tension or compression). In engineering terms, they are classified as tension rods or compression rods. This force application is vital for resisting lateral rail displacement caused by dynamic train loads. Working in conjunction with gauge blocks and insulated gauge blocks, they stabilize track geometry. Along the rod joints, at regular intervals, specially shaped steel bars are embedded in the central base plate. This design prevents longitudinal seam gaps and expansion of sleeper plates, and when used in combination with rubber pads and iron base plates, it further enhances system stability.

To ensure durability, GNEE RAIL performs anti-rust treatment on the middle section of gauge tie rods within a 10cm range, which is usually supplemented with galvanized coatings or protective paints, consistent with the corrosion resistance standards of our high-strength bolts and railway washers. Rod dimensions and spacing are selected according to lateral clearance specifications, with typical joint or free edge distances ranging from 25 to 35cm to ensure compatibility with various rail profiles and fastener systems.

As a professional manufacturer of railway fasteners, GNEE RAIL boasts rich experience and advanced production equipment in gauge tie rod manufacturing, with an excellent track record of providing high-quality products to international customers. Our product range includes ordinary gauge tie rods for non-electrified lines and insulated gauge tie rods for electrified tracks.
