Functionally, gauge tie rods exert a pair of equal and opposite axial forces along their shaft, resulting in axial elongation or shortening (known as axial tension or compression). In engineering terms, they are classified as tension rods or compression rods. This force application is vital for resisting lateral rail displacement caused by dynamic train loads.
