External Standard Rail Waist Hole Specifications and Their Impact on Stress

  • What are the common positions and sizes of rail web holes in foreign standard rails?

European EN standard rails have holes in the rail web at 1/3 height from the rail base, with diameters mostly 22-25mm; American AREA standard rails have holes at a slightly higher position, 1/2 height from the rail base, with diameters 20-22mm; Japanese JIS standards only have holes in special-purpose rails, with diameters 18-20mm, and must deviate 5mm from the rail web central axis to reduce stress concentration.

  • What impact do rail web holes have on rail stress?

Holes cause local stress concentration in the rail web, with stress values at the hole edges 2-3 times higher than in non-porous areas, easily becoming fatigue crack sources. The more holes, the greater the impact. The fatigue life of single-hole rails is 10%-15% lower than that of non-porous rails, and double-hole rails are 20%-25% lower. Under bending loads, plastic deformation is prone to occur at the holes, affecting the overall bearing capacity of the rail.

  • What are the reinforcement measures for rail web holes in foreign standard rails?

Round the hole edges with a fillet radius ≥3mm, which can reduce the stress concentration factor by more than 30%. Perform local quenching around the hole to increase hardness to HB350-380 and enhance fatigue resistance. Use bushing reinforcement, install metal bushings in the holes, which fit closely with the rail to disperse local stress, suitable for heavy-haul lines.

  • What are the testing items for rail web holes?

Measure the hole position deviation, with lateral deviation not exceeding ±2mm and longitudinal deviation ≤3mm. Check the hole edge roughness, Ra value must be ≤12.5μm, without burrs or cracks. Use stress testing equipment to measure the stress value at the hole, which must not exceed 70% of the material's yield strength under rated load to ensure safe use.

  • What should be noted when using foreign standard rail web holes in China?

It is necessary to check the compatibility between the holes and domestic accessories. If the hole diameter deviation exceeds 2mm, reaming or bushing is required for adjustment. When installing accessories, the bolt tightening torque is 10%-15% lower than that for non-porous rails to avoid excessive stress at the holes. Regularly check whether cracks appear at the hole edges, and repair or replace rails in time if problems are found.
