Effect of the installation angle of the spring clip on the buckle pressure

  • What is the standard installation angle of elastic clips?

The installation angle of elastic clips is usually 10°-15° (angle with the vertical direction of the rail). Type I elastic clips are mostly 12°, and Type II are 10°. This angle ensures that the clamping force acts evenly on both sides of the rail head. Calibrate with an angle ruler during installation, and the deviation must be ≤1°, otherwise the fixing effect will be affected. Too small an angle easily leads to insufficient clamping force, and too large may damage the elastic clip.

  • How much does the clamping force change with a 1° angle deviation?

A 1° angle deviation will change the clamping force by 5%-8%. For example, when the standard clamping force is 10kN, a 1° deviation may drop to 9.2kN or rise to 10.8kN. The deviation impact is more obvious in curve sections. A large angle deviation of outer elastic clips will make the clamping force exceed the upper limit, accelerating wear. The angle should be corrected by adjusting the elastic clip position to ensure the clamping force is within the standard range.

  • How to quickly check the installation angle of elastic clips?

Fit a special angle template to the side of the elastic clip and observe the gap, with a gap ≤0.5mm being qualified. The gauge can also be used for indirect judgment. Angle deviation will cause slight changes in gauge. When exceeding ±0.5mm, the angle must be checked. High-speed railways sample 50 elastic clips per kilometer, and ordinary railways 30, to ensure the angle is compliant.

  • What problems can angle deviation cause?

A small angle will make the elastic clip clamping force insufficient, the rail easy to loosen, and the gauge deviation increase. A large angle will make the elastic clip stress too high, shorten the fatigue life by 30%-40%, or even break. Long-term deviation will cause rail eccentric wear, poor wheel-rail contact, and increase train vibration. Regular inspection and adjustment are required to avoid accumulated deviation.

  • What is the simple method to adjust the angle?

Tap the tail of the elastic clip with a rubber hammer, monitoring with an angle ruler while tapping until the angle meets the standard. If the deviation is large, loosen the bolt, adjust the elastic clip position, and retighten. After adjustment, retest the clamping force to ensure it reaches more than 90% of the design value. After adjusting turnout elastic clips, check the cooperation with other components.
