Continuous casting process is an important process to convert smelted molten steel into heavy rail billets, which has a far-reaching impact on the final quality of heavy rails.

 

In the continuous casting process, the crystallizer is the core component. The use of efficient crystallizer technology, such as copper plate material optimization and cooling water channel design improvement, can achieve uniform cooling and ensure the surface quality of the billet. Taking the heavy rail continuous casting production line of a steel plant as an example, by adopting a new crystallizer copper plate coating, the depth of vibration marks on the billet surface was reduced from 0.3mm to 0.15mm, effectively reducing the occurrence of surface defects.

At the same time, precise control of the secondary cooling zone is also crucial. According to factors such as steel type and casting speed, the amount of secondary cooling water is dynamically adjusted to ensure uniform cooling of the billet along the length direction to avoid internal cracks. The advanced continuous casting production line is also equipped with dynamic light pressure technology, which applies pressure at the end of the solidification of the billet to compensate for solidification shrinkage and improve the center segregation and looseness of the billet. For example, when producing 60kg/m heavy rail billets, the carbon segregation index at the center of the billet was reduced from 1.15 to 1.05 after the application of this technology, which improved the uniformity of the internal quality of the billet. High-quality continuous casting billets provide a good foundation for subsequent rolling, which is conducive to rolling out high-precision, high-performance national standard heavy rails.
