Frozen Rail Joint (Rail Joint Bar, Rail Fishplates)
This type of joint is known as a frozen rail joint, achieved by increasing frictional resistance. Special crescent washers can be utilized to compress the bolt holes of standard rail joints. It's recommended that these joints be avoided within the full length of small bridges and within the temperature span of steel beams with rail expansion adjusters. Frozen rail joints are employed when conditions for rail welding are not feasible.
