How To Maintain Mountain Railways

Mountain railways travel through complex terrain and are greatly affected by geological disasters, climate change and other factors. Scientific maintenance is the core to ensure their safe operation.

The track system is the top priority of maintenance. Rails are prone to wear, deformation and loose joints under the influence of frequent train loads and complex terrain. It is necessary to regularly use flaw detectors to detect cracks inside the rails, and replace rails with excessive wear in a timely manner; use high-precision measuring instruments to check geometric parameters such as track gauge and level, and adjust the offset parts by tamping, pads, etc.; for joint bolts, regularly tighten and replace rusted and damaged parts. At the same time, the roadbed is screened and ballast is added to restore its elasticity and drainage capacity to prevent the stability of the track from decreasing due to roadbed compaction.

Roadbed maintenance is related to the safety of the railway foundation. Rainfall in mountainous areas can easily cause scouring and collapse of roadbeds. It is necessary to strengthen the cleaning of drainage systems, ensure the smooth flow of drainage facilities such as side ditches and gutters, and repair scouring gaps in time; for unstable sections such as soft soil, high filling and deep excavation, adopt grouting reinforcement, set up retaining walls and other measures to enhance the stability of roadbeds; for areas prone to frost damage, insulation treatment should be done before the arrival of winter, and the settlement of roadbeds after freezing and thawing should be checked and repaired in spring.

The improvement of the surrounding environment cannot be ignored. There are many risks of landslides and falling rocks in mountainous areas. Regular inspections of mountains along the railway should be carried out to remove or reinforce dangerous rocks; in areas prone to mudslides, flood discharge channels should be cleared in advance and blocking facilities should be checked; trees on both sides of the railway should be pruned to prevent branches from invading and affecting driving safety. In addition, a complete monitoring and early warning system should be established, using satellite remote sensing, Internet of Things sensors and other technologies to monitor mountain displacement, rainfall and other data in real time. Once abnormalities are found, timely measures should be taken to minimize disaster risks and ensure the safe and stable operation of mountain railways in all aspects.
