Functions of railroad tie plates
In practical railway applications, the primary types of rail tie plates utilized are the single shoulder tie plate and the double shoulder tie plate. Implementing either of these plates enhances track stability and significantly extends the lifespan of wooden rail ties. These tie plates are manufactured by punching and shearing hot-rolled steel sections, ensuring proper cant, a uniform bearing surface for the rail, and improved load distribution to the ties. By securely holding the rail to gauge, they promote uniform wear on the rail head while safeguarding ties against excessive wear.
Railway tie plates feature a long end, known as the field end, which is positioned outside of the rails. In the case of single shoulder tie plates, the shoulder is situated on the field end of the plate, while the gauge end, or short end, is positioned inside the rails. When placing an order, it is essential to specify the rail section or the width of the rail base. Alternatively, providing a drawing or sample can facilitate accurate procurement.
