Under sleeper tie pads vs Under rail pad

Railway rubber pad, also called rubber rail pad, rubber tie plate. Rubber rail pads are an essential component of the railway structural system and belong to a category of rail base plates.

Under sleeper pads (USPs) go under the entire sleeper, distributing load, reducing ballast wear, and protecting sleepers, ideal for bridges/tunnels; while under rail pads (URPs), placed directly under the rail, focus on isolating rail vibration and noise at the rail-sleeper interface, with different stiffnesses suited for specific needs, forming a hierarchy of pads for varied track protection. USPs manage overall track structure health and maintenance cycles, whereas URPs manage direct wheel-rail forces.

Under Sleeper Pads (USPs)

  • Location: Directly beneath the railway sleeper (tie).

  • Primary Goal: Load distribution, reducing ballast attrition (crushing), and protecting the sleeper from damage.

  • Benefits: Extends maintenance intervals, preserves track geometry, reduces structure-borne noise, and provides elasticity on rigid foundations like bridges/tunnels.

  • Material: Polyurethane, rubber, HDPE.

Under Rail Pads (URPs) / Rail Pads

  • Location: Between the steel rail and the sleeper/baseplate.

  • Primary Goal: Isolating vibration and noise directly from the wheel-rail contact point, managing rail-sleeper abrasion.

  • Benefits: Dampens dynamic forces, prevents rail-sleeper metal-on-metal wear (abrasion), offers electrical insulation, and can reduce rail corrugation.

  • Material: Natural rubber, styrene, chloroprene.

Key Differences Summarized of Under sleeper tie pads and Under rail pad

  • Placement: USP = under sleeper; URP = under rail.

  • Function: USP = ballast/sleeper protection & load management; URP = direct rail vibration/noise isolation.

  • Stiffness: Typically, under-rail pads are stiffer than under-sleeper pads to handle high dynamic forces, forming a hierarchy of stiffness from rail to ballast.

GNEE RAIL provides exceptional elastic rail pads of various types for high-speed railways, normal-speed railways, and cranes. Especially the rail pads made of rubber, EVA, TPEE, and HDPE are very popular with customers. Our railway rubber pads fit the rails such as UIC54, UIC60, BS80lbs, BS100lbs, etc. We have more than 130set of machines in our production lines which can reach an annual production capacity of up to 2000, 000 pieces of rail pads. We offer a wide range of rail pads and other track materials at competitive prices.
