The production process of Dog Road spikes

Aug 04, 2025 Leave a message

Railroad spikes, also known as rail spikes or sleeper spikes, are critical components used to secure rails and sleepers in railway systems. They are typically made of metal and are used to secure the base of the rails to wooden or concrete sleepers, ensuring railway stability and safety. GNEE RAIL offers a variety of railroad spikes, including dog-head spikes, screw spikes, Ss series sleeper screws, square-head screw spikes, Hexagon screw spikes, and double-head screw spikes.

The manufacturing of dog spikes-essential components in railway fastening systems-involves a series of precision-driven stages, from raw material selection to final inspection, ensuring they meet the rigorous demands of rail operations.

Raw Material Preparation

The process begins with selecting high-quality raw materials tailored to performance needs. GNEE RAIL sources materials that align with international standards, ensuring compatibility with other fasteners such as elastic clips and sleeper bolts from the outset.

Heating, Forging, and Shaping

Raw materials are heated to optimal temperatures (typically 1000–1200°C) to enhance malleability, then forged into shape using precision presses. This forging process-critical for enhancing tensile strength and wear resistance-shapes the spike's square or tapered shank, pointed tip, and head (square or round per design). For spiral dog spikes, additional threading operations are performed to ensure secure anchoring in pre-drilled sleeper holes, complementing the grip of rail pads and gauge blocks.

Finishing and Quality Inspection

Post-forging, spikes undergo finishing steps: trimming excess material, deburring, and surface treatments (e.g., hot-dip galvanizing or oxide coating) to boost corrosion resistance-vital for compatibility with harsh environments alongside other exposed fasteners like fish plates. GNEE RAIL implements strict inspections, checking dimensions, hardness (≥100HB for standard spikes), and structural integrity to ensure each spike integrates seamlessly with its fastening system, supporting long-term track stability.
