The Function of the Railway Fastening System

The primary role of the railway fastening system is to securely attach the rail to the sleepers (British Isles, Australasia, and Africa) or railroad ties (North America). It must not only provide a certain level of resistance to rail movement but also withstand vertical, lateral, and longitudinal forces exerted by the rail. To prevent excessive deformation caused by these three forces, which could lead to increased train oscillations, reduced ride comfort, and potential safety concerns, the commonly employed railway fasteners mainly fall into two categories: the Spring Blade type and the Elastic Clip type. In comparison to rigid fasteners, elastic fasteners offer advantages such as the ability to follow the steel rail's deformation, resistance to loosening, and excellent fatigue resistance.
