In the railway transportation system, rails are like steel arteries, bearing the crushing and impact of trains day after day. As railway transportation develops towards high speed and heavy load, the alternating stresses borne by rails are becoming more and more complex, and fatigue damage has become an important hidden danger threatening the safety of rails. Rail fatigue testing is the key means to crack the "endurance code" of rails. Through a scientific and rigorous testing process, the ability of rails to resist fatigue damage is evaluated to ensure safe railway operations.
1. Background and significance of rail fatigue testing
During the service of rails, repeated crushing by train wheels will cause alternating stress inside the rails. When the number of such stress cycles reaches a certain level, tiny defects or weak parts inside the rails may initiate cracks and gradually expand, eventually leading to rail breakage and causing serious railway safety accidents. Especially on high-speed railway lines, the train runs at a high speed and the axle weight is concentrated. In heavy-load railways, the train load is large and the operation frequency is high, so the fatigue load on the rails is more severe. Therefore, conducting rail fatigue test, accurately evaluating the fatigue performance of rails, and predicting the service life of rails in advance are of great significance to ensure the safety of railway transportation and reduce maintenance costs.

II. Principle and method of rail fatigue test
(I) Test principle
Rail fatigue test is based on material fatigue theory, that is, under the action of alternating stress, even if the stress level is lower than its static yield strength, fatigue damage will occur after a certain number of cyclic loading. The test simulates the stress state of the rail in actual service, applies periodic loads to the rail specimen, and records the number of cycles from the beginning of loading to the appearance of fatigue cracks and then to complete fracture of the specimen, so as to evaluate the fatigue life of the rail. At the same time, with the help of microscopic analysis methods, such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the changes in the microstructure of the rail during the fatigue process are observed, and the initiation and extension mechanism of fatigue cracks are deeply explored.

(II) Main test methods
Laboratory simulation test: Standard specimens are cut from the rails and tested on fatigue testing machines. Common fatigue testing machines include electro-hydraulic servo fatigue testing machines, resonance fatigue testing machines, etc. During the test, the load type (such as bending fatigue, tensile-compression fatigue, etc.), load amplitude, loading frequency and other parameters are set according to the actual stress of the rails.
On-site monitoring test: On the actual railway line, sensors are installed to monitor the rails in real time. Through strain sensors, displacement sensors and other equipment, the stress and strain data of the rails when the train passes are collected to analyze the actual stress state and fatigue damage of the rails. At the same time, combined with regular non-destructive testing (such as ultrasonic flaw detection and eddy current flaw detection), the development of cracks inside the rails is tracked to provide real data support for laboratory simulation tests, so that the test results are closer to the actual service situation.

III. Application scenarios of rail fatigue test
(I) Rail production and research and development link
In rail production enterprises, fatigue test is a key link in new product development and quality control. By conducting fatigue tests on rail specimens made of different compositions and different production processes, the differences in fatigue performance are compared and analyzed, and the chemical composition and production process of the rails are optimized.
(II) Railway project acceptance link
After the completion of a new railway project, fatigue testing of the laid rails is an important part of quality acceptance. Laboratory fatigue tests are conducted on sample rail specimens, combined with on-site rail force monitoring, to evaluate the fatigue reliability of the rails within the designed service life. If the test results do not meet the standards, the construction party can be required to replace the rails or take remedial measures in a timely manner to avoid affecting the operational safety of the railway after opening due to insufficient fatigue performance of the rails.

(III) Railway operation and maintenance link
In the daily operation of the railway, fatigue performance evaluation of the serving rails is carried out regularly. According to the test results, the rails with severe fatigue damage are monitored or replaced in advance, and maintenance plans are arranged reasonably.
IV. Development trend of rail fatigue testing technology
With the continuous development of materials science, information technology and artificial intelligence technology, rail fatigue testing technology is moving towards intelligence and precision. On the one hand, the new test equipment integrates big data analysis and machine learning algorithms, which can quickly process and deeply mine massive test data, automatically identify fatigue crack characteristics, and more accurately predict the fatigue life of rails. On the other hand, the application of three-dimensional digital modeling and simulation technology can simulate the fatigue process of rails under complex working conditions in computers, reduce the number of physical tests, and speed up the development of new products. In addition, the application of nanotechnology in material surface treatment is expected to improve the surface performance of rails and enhance fatigue resistance, which also poses new challenges and opportunities to the corresponding fatigue resistance test methods.
