Preparation of changing the fish plates

Preparation:

Gather necessary tools and equipment including bars, thermometer, cross level, fishbolt spanner, running off spanner, torque spanner, brushes, scrapers, and a set of temporary bonds.

Ensure availability of materials and spares such as new fishplates and corresponding fishbolts.

Assessment of Risks:

Be cautious of fingers during the removal process to avoid injury if the joint closes up.

Familiarize yourself with COSHH information regarding lubricants to be used.

Avoid overtightening bolts to prevent potential misalignment caused by restricting sliding action.

Execution:

Check rail temperature; do not start work if it exceeds 32℃.

Coordinate with the Signaller to ensure train movement has been stopped.

Changing Process:

Use bars to lift and remove the rail if necessary.

Employ appropriate tools like the fishbolt spanner and running off spanner to loosen and remove fishplates and bolts.

Clean the area with brushes and scrapers to remove debris and ensure a smooth surface.

Install the correct pair of new fishplates and corresponding fishbolts, ensuring proper alignment.

Use a torque spanner to tighten bolts to the specified torque, avoiding over-tightening.
