Practice of lightweight design of crane rails

Traditional crane rails are mostly solid steel structures, but the "honeycomb composite rails" launched by Sany Heavy Industry in 2024 use a steel-aluminum hybrid material with a bionic honeycomb structure filled inside, which reduces the weight by 40% while maintaining the same load-bearing capacity. This design is particularly suitable for mobile gantry cranes and can reduce infrastructure costs.

In addition, additive manufacturing (3D printing) has begun to be used for customized rail accessories. GE Additive in the United States uses laser cladding technology to produce complex-shaped rail connectors to reduce weld weaknesses.

However, the durability of lightweight materials in extremely low temperatures or corrosive environments still needs to be verified.
