Railroad spikes and screw spikes are essential components in rail fastening systems, each with its unique characteristics and applications:
Railroad Spikes: Traditionally, railroad spikes were driven manually into wooden sleepers using heavy hammers. However, modern spike driving machines have replaced this manual labor. Railroad spikes are typically chisel-shaped with a flat-edged point, designed to penetrate wooden sleepers effectively. While they may have a lower fixing power compared to screw spikes, they remain widely used due to their cost-effectiveness and reliability in securing rails to wooden sleepers.
Screw Spikes: Screw spikes, on the other hand, are screwed into pre-bored holes in sleepers using specialized equipment. Although they have a higher manufacturing cost compared to railroad spikes, screw spikes offer greater fixing power, approximately two times that of railroad spikes. This increased fixing power makes them particularly suitable for use in high-stress areas or where additional stability is required. Additionally, screw spikes can be used in conjunction with spring washers to further enhance their holding capacity and resistance to loosening.
