How to correctly use the SKL rail fastening system?

To correctly use the SKL rail fastening system, pre-assemble components like the baseplate, rail pad, and insulator, then place the rail onto the sleeper. After ensuring components are closely attached, slide the SKL tension clamps into position so both spring arms rest on the rail foot, and tighten the T-bolt with a washer and nut until the middle bend is close to the rail foot. Proper tightening ensures the correct clamping force and is critical for the system's safety and performance.

Step 1: Prepare the sleeper and components

  • The system is often pre-assembled at the factory.

  • Install anchor bolts in the concrete sleeper.

  • Place the baseplate (or sole plate) over the anchor bolts, and secure it with a T-bolt, washer, and nut. Alternatively, the T-bolt can be fastened into an embedded socket in the sleeper.

  • Place the rail pad (an elastic mat) between the baseplate and the sleeper to absorb shock and wear.

  • Place the rail on top of the baseplate and rail pad.

Step 2: Position the SKL tension clamps

  • Slide the SKL tension clamps (or clips) into place so they are positioned correctly over the rail foot.

  • At the start, the spring arms should be resting against the rail foot.

  • If you encounter difficulty, use a special installation tool or a hammer on the tail of the clip to gently knock it into place.

Step 3: Tighten the T-bolt

  • Tighten the T-bolt, washer, and nut to draw the clip down onto the rail foot.

  • The middle bend of the clip will be drawn toward the rail foot as you tighten.

  • Tighten until the middle bend is close to the rail foot, which indicates optimal mounting and ensures the correct tension is applied.

  • The elasticity of the clip is designed to ensure a consistent, fixed clamping force.

Step 4: Final checks

  • Verify that the distance between the inside of the clip's small circular arc and the end of the rail shoulder is the correct amount, typically 8-10 mm.

  • For adjustments, if needed, loosen the T-bolt to move the clip, then retighten.
